THE SHROPSHIRE WAY
This 136 mile trail devised by the Ramblers Association in 1980 takes you through the most beautiful countryside in Shropshire. Over valleys and hills with spectacular views and history at every turn. Through Shropshire's wonderful Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Across the great hogs back of the LongMynd, The mysterious rock outcrops of the Stiperstones and the geologically unique Wenlock Edge. You will walk along Bronze Age ways, Roman Roads, Drover's trails and stage coach highways. It will lead you past Iron Age forts, Abbeys, a ruined Priory, Norman castles and ancient churches. You can explore the birthplace of the industrial revolution and see an aqueduct built by Thomas Telford and the World Heritage Site at Ironbridge.
A wonderful walk that shows you Shropshire's geological roots, its historical importance as a borderland and the heart of Britain's Industrial Revolution. All of which have formed the County's character to make it "Uniquely Shropshire".
The Southern Section from the Stiperstones to Wilderhope Manor on Wenlock Edge is to be upgraded over the next two years with financial help from:
- The Shropshire County Council
- The Ramblers Association
- The Heritage Lottery Fund
- The European Regional Development Fund
A new Countryside Access Team member, Jim Stabler, has been appointed to manage the Project with volunteer help from the Ramblers Association and local Parish Path's Partnership (P3) Groups.
The route will have new stiles, gates, finger posts and way markers installed and many path improvements undertaken. There will also be minor alterations to the route to take it to new places like the hill fort of Bury Ditches and the top of Brown Clee. The section from Bridges to the Long Mynd gliding club over Adstone Hill will no longer be used as part of the way. Instead the walk will run along the Portway via Robin Hood's Butts and Pole Cottage to the Gliding Club.
In addition a new link will be added to make the Southern half a circular walk in its own right. A way marked path will link the Long Mynd with Wenlock Edge. There will also be 6 shorter easier access circular walks established for people who do not have the time or ability to walk the whole route.
Finally a new guide book will be produced in the form of a folder with an A4 guide insert for each section of the walk. The guides will be downloadable from this Website.
Updates and any alterations to the route will be published on this website as downloads until the guide book is finalised.
