The jewel in the crown is the wonderful 18 mile long Simon Evans Way following in the footsteps of the local postman, writer and Great War veteran. There are also some excellent shorter walks to suit all the family. You can find these walks on this site or go to www.cmfa.co.uk for more information.

The Parish Paths Partnership (P3)
The Parish Paths Partnership (P3) scheme has been running in Shropshire for over 10 years and is supported and promoted by the County Council's Countryside Access Team (based at Old Nils Quarry, Pontesbury). There are over 50 of these voluntary groups in existence, who undertake tasks enabling their local network of Public Rights of Way to be used to their best advantage.

These P3 groups are formed from local communities, ramblers, horse riders or even just dog walkers all of whom have a common desire to see their local bridleways and footpaths open and useable. Leading on from many of the Parish Plans that have already been completed, there has been a strong desire to use the network to access historic sites, viewpoints, safe routes to village amenities and to provide circular walks for both ‘casual’ and ‘serious’ walkers. As a result there is frequently a benefit to the local economy in the form of shops, pubs and B&Bs.

The (P3) groups meet to agree how best to look after their path network. Depending on the groups’ ability, age and commitment, they can perform tasks ranging from simply walking and surveying the path and producing a condition report, to practical improvements such as clearance, installing new stiles, gates, bridges and waymarking.

Once the network is in a useable condition, there is the scope for guided themed walks and rides based around local history or archaeology, flora and fauna, local legends and basic healthy living pursuits. Promotion leaflets can be produced to advertise the locality and there is the possibility for the groups to access grants for local projects.

What help can I get ?

Phil Betts is the County Council’s new P3 Officer and will be only too willing to help with tools, training courses, maps, negotiations, access problems, practical advice and grants to help run the group as well as for specific relevant projects.

What now ?

Contact Phil and he will let you know details of your local group and if there is not a P3 group in your area, he’ll even help you start one!

Shropshire Hill Walking Club

We are a mainly Shropshire-based group of walkers, with meetings arranged every Sunday throughout the year, as well as weekday evenings in summer. The walks are of various grades, from local strolls to fairly serious mountain scrambles in Snowdonia and the Lake District. We welcome walkers of all abilities and aspirations - take a look at the schedule, call up the walk leader or a committee member if you like, and come out on a walk or two.

The normal Sunday meeting place is Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury. Times vary - see the walks schedules.
